From A Current Affair
3 December 2002-Cell Factor: dispelling diet myths

When it comes to our health it seems we’re constantly bombarded with quick-fixes and miracle cures. But a new diet devised by a renowned cardiologist doesn’t claim to be a miracle. Instead, it challenges popular myths and offers proven solutions for long-term weight loss and other health-related issues. ACA takes a closer look.

Despite an increasing focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, according to Sydney cardiologist and author Dr Ross Walker, we’re becoming sicker, fatter and more fatigued.

“What we’re doing wrong is we’re eating far too much of processed, packaged food and the processed, packaged foods all have a little bit of these synthetic trans-fatty acids and because of that our cells are becoming sicker,” he says.

To combat such a scenario, Dr Walker’s developed a diet, which he claims can dramatically lower cholesterol, help people to lose weight, gain energy, reduce blood pressure, reverse diabetes and even cardiovascular disease – it’s called the Cell Factor Diet.

“We’ve been told for so long that the problem is too much fat in our diets and we should be on a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet. Well, that just isn’t true because it you go on a low-fat diet, your cell membrane loses normal fat, the natural fats that it should have,” he explains.

For 75-year-old George Norton, adopting the Cell Factor program has literally changed his life. When he first met with Dr Walker, George had a litany of health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities and signs of a minor heart attack.

Now, Dr Walker says, George’s health is back on track.

“He’s responded beautifully, his diabetes has basically normalised, his blood pressure is now magnificent. I think we measured it the other day at 110 on 70, his cholesterol is down well below four, so it’s really going in the right direction,” he says.

Understandably, George is also thrilled his health has improved so substantially.

“I feel I can go through life now if I can stick to what I’m doing with not too many fears of sudden heart attacks and strokes,” he says.

Peter Saez is another committed convert to the Cell Factor Diet. He embraced the program after suffering a sudden heart attack two years ago.

“One afternoon I’m walking up the road and all of a sudden I get a pinch and a lot of pain there and so I was able to walk into the doctor’s surgery and they told me I was having a heart attack … anyway, an hour-and-a-half later I was at St Vincent’s getting operated on,” he says.

While Peter says following the Cell Factor Diet has played a major part in his recovery, under Dr Walker’s direction, he is also complementing the program with regular exercise. A move Peter hopes will help him stay alive for longer.

“I’m basically trying to get guarantees if you know what I mean. Not that anybody can give you them, but I know I’ve got to do the right thing by myself to hopefully not regress back into whatever happened to me two years ago,’ he says.
