22 March 2004-Stress busters: coping strategies
Information in the following fact sheet has been provided by Dr Ross Walker, cardiologist
and author.
Five reasons for stress:
- Excessive choice
- Multi-skilling
- Instant answers
- The pace of change
- Litigation and other conflict situations
We cannot hope to live a stress-free life in modern society for these reasons but
we can improve our responses to stress using a combination of techniques.
- Goal setting;
- Reduce our bad coping mechanisms: these include anger, jealousy, negativity, psychological
and physical symptoms and addictions;
- Improve our good coping mechanisms: these include learning to deal with the acute
stress, better time-management, de-cluttering your life, positivity and humour,
daily self-management programs;
- The importance of nurturing your relationships;
- Creative solutions: these include learning to focus on the present, leading a principal-centred
life, nurturing your attitude, questioning the thinking-filling connection and aiming
for balance in everything you do.
